7 steps to developing your business mission and vision
August 13, 2024
Having a well-defined mission and vision statement guides your business toward its goals and inspires your employees, new hires and customers. Developing the right mission and vision may require some time and will likely be adjusted as your business grows.
These 7 steps will get you started:
Reflect on your values: Start by identifying the core values that define your business and reflect its beliefs and priorities. What are your strengths? Why do your customers and employees stay loyal?
Define your purpose (Mission): Craft a succinct mission statement that outlines the fundamental purpose of your business, including who you serve, what you offer and why you exist.
Imagine your future (Vision): Envision the future of your business to create a vision statement that includes your long-term aspirations and goals. Where do you want to be in five to 10 years? How will you grow your employee culture?
Talk with people: Involve your employees, customers and partners in the process to understand what your business is doing well already. Why do employees and customers appreciate your business? Why does someone want to work for you?
Keep it short and simple: Be brief in both your mission and vision statements to make them memorable and easily understood by all.
Consistently review: Review and refine your mission and vision statements regularly. This keeps them relevant and current with your business goals.
Honor your mission and vision: Stay dedicated to your mission and vision. Instead of simply writing them and moving on, incorporate them into your daily actions and those of your employees. Embrace them as the core of your brand.
Finally, display your mission and vision statement in a prominent location so you and your employees can be reminded of why you are in business. And make sure it is included in your marketing and promotional materials, from printed brochures to your website.
